When IS it a good time to micromanage??

How many times have you said, if I want something done right, I have to do it myself.  Too many to count huh?  Well, I'm learning that it is best to teach others and delegate, delegate, delegate.  Sooooo, when is it a good time to micro-manage you might ask?  Well, anytime you're doing anything that has an effect on your health.

I am learning so much more about nutrition and loving the www.integrativenutrition.com journey.  Instead of saying what you can't do, think about what you can.  In the past few weeks I have explored some wonderful things about myself and I'm loving the way I feel.  Not only am I adding more cooked leafy greens (turnips, collards, kale, swiss chard) but also mixed greens salads with fresh herbs such as basil, mint, tarragon or even stevia, instead of raisins or craisins slice grapes in half and toss them in, tomatoes, onions, anything fresh.  And PLEASE don't drown it in ranch but find or better yet, make your own italian dressing such as one with white balsamic vinegar.  With just a few changes, I'm sleeping better and feeling better with more energy.

The biggest way you can make a change in your lifestyle is to get rid of every processed piece of junk or non-junk so called diet food in your house.  No matter what it is, it's bad for you and you don't know what is in it.

If you don't like a big breakfast, don't have time to make one, or just want something sweet and something to drink in the morning, try this on for size.  It will give you loads of energy, it will satisfy your sweet tooth and its all natural.  What is it you say??? It's power/protein bars.  Make your own power/protein bars.  There are all kinds of varieties but here is what I had this morning.

Here's the recipe and I'll get a picture up soon.

Oatmeal Raisin Bars
4TB       rolled oats
1-1/2 c   raisins (I used 1/2 c each:  golden raisins, regular raisins, & c craisins)
1/2 c      of your favorite nuts (I used roasted almonds, but any raw nut is ok)
1/8 tsp   sea salt
1/4 tsp   vanilla, pure
1 tsp      coconut oil (optional; but its good for you & makes bars soft & chewy)

Put the rollled oats in the food processor and pulse until the consistency of coarse grits or meal.  Add all other ingredients and blend well until it forms into a slight ball.  Place in a wax paper lined pan and refrigerate until set, about 1 hour.  Take them out, slice and wrap individually or place in individual ziploc snack bags so you can just grab them and go.

Yield:  4 large bars.

I grab a large glass of water to quench my thirst and a bar, and I'm good to go until lunch.  So, spend some time at the beginning of the week managing your meals and you will be well on the road to managing your health!

Enjoy!  Be well.....

I "AM NOT" Every Woman

How often do you get overwhelmed with all that you have to do?  School, family, work, housekeeping, outside commitments, and on and on....  Well, did you notice that you left your name off of the list.  That's why I've titled this post, I 'AM NOT' Every Woman.  You know, the song goes,  ♫"I'm every woman, it's all in me"?  Well, it may be but you need to save some for yourself.  We need to be full cups that overflow into other peoples lives.  It's kind of like when the airline stewardess tells you to put the mask on yourself and then help the person next to you.

This is also true in life.  How can we help those around us if we aren't first connected to the source ourselves?  John 15:4 says "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.  We need to rest in Him.  If I'm speaking to you, for the next 7 days, try scheduling some alone time for yourself.  It's time to put your name at the top of your to do list.  Do something fun, silly or relaxing for yourself.  We have to rejuvenate ourselves and replenish our energy on a regular basis, because when we are "tapped out" how can we lift a hand to help others, let alone do all that we have on our lists?   Take care of yourself first!!  You'll be happy you did and those around you who love you, will notice too and be happy you did as well.

Minoring in Procrastination

One thing I'm working on this week is to remove the "spirit of procrastination" from my life altogether.  But I need to be realistic first.  So, instead of "majoring" in it, I am moving towards "minoring" in it.  Time spent wisely is of major importance, especially when you have a plate full of things that need to be done.  One thing I've started doing is going to bed earlier instead of wasting time flipping channels watching mindless television.  In my old house, we didn't have a television in every room and this was not a problem. Reading was more prevalent and peace and silence was the norm.  I am going to tear a huge page out of that book and return to that practice.  Live your life on purpose by consciously removing all of the distractions in your life.  Since I've stopped watching television so late, my worship time has improved in the morning and I am more fulfilled and more rejuvenated when I wake up to tackle the days tasks before everyone else wakes up.  Give it a try!  It could only help!

For the Love of Friends

I'm dedicating this post to my friend and "big brother" Anthony W.  I've known him all of my life.  Not always had the best of times with him, but our good days have definitely outweighed the bad days.  He has stuggled with a bipolar disease (manic depression) for most of my adult life as well.  After a recent bout with depression which looked something like 9+ months of being hold up in his home with basically no care, he had a heart attack but was able to call 911.  He has been in the hospital for 2 months now and lost over 60lbs.  He just found out less than 2 weeks ago that he has prostate cancer and it has spread to his hips and thighs.  Fortunately for Anthony, he was just released and has moved to Tallahassee to spend time with his daughter and grandchildren.  I love Anthony and will always consider him as my big brother.  Oh yeah, I forgot to mention he has kidney failure and has to do dialysis 2-3x a week.  His spirits are remarkably high.  But my question is... how did this happen?  Not even why at this point...  His diet now has to drastically change.  Well, let's take a look at his diet.  Heavy laden fats, organ meats, sodas galore...  A heaviness just fell upon me to take a look at how I can keep my loved ones from falling sick to these ugly diseases.  I just registered to start school at http://www.integrativenutrition.com/ and will start next month.  I am so excited.  I truly believe that the longevity of life lies in large part to what we put in our mouths.  This story is not over.  We are praying for Anthony but we need to do our part.  Faith without works is dead...

Healing thru Food

Had a long but good meeting yesterday with The Wellness Place about our future venture together. I've come to the conclusion that if I talk the talk, I have to walk the walk. Which also means I have to be transparent as well. Soooooo, my A1C was a 6.4 UUGGGGGHHHH!! I know that if Doc had checked it 45 days ago, it would have been much better. So, needless to say, it has increased a tenth of a point and its beyond time to get it together. I also feel that this is the route cause of why I've been feeling so lousy lately. I'll be talking about my journey as well as my 83 year old mom's improved health issues (type 2 diabetes & alzheimers) as well. I've been helping her get better and feeding myself junk. Well, these are the last bags of Lay's Sea Salt & Vinegar Kettle Chips :( as well as Lifesavers Gummies Bunnies & Eggs. (really can't believe how big a baby I'm being about this) Oh well, I know that this is all a part of my testimony/journey and I'm glad God is using me to do it. Please be sure to follow me on twitter: @bittysbackporch as I have been tweeting more than blogging, but hopefully that will change. Like a recent chapter in Battlefield of the Mind: Little by Little. Bye for now!

Been having thoughts of what it would be like to heal people through food. This was divine inspiration from the Holy Spirit. Checking into the next step of what this will look like. Will post links to some interesting articles soon.

today's the first day of the rest of my life

Wow! I read someplace yesterday that I should start keeping a journal. What better way (or not) to keep one online. How more open can one be? I'm feeling sorta blah today. I want to start living my best life NOW. No one can do this for me. I have to begin today and do it myself even if others around me choose not to. Amongst many of my new "motto's": Fabulous at Forty - a retrospective and introspective look into the future of my life. Revamping me inside and out. And I've got 350 days to do it until my 40th birthday. 2ndly: No more pretending! I'm tired of pretending. Life is too short. I'm tired of keeping secrets, tired of helping others stay or live in denial anymore. It's time for everybody-family, cousins, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, husbands, wives, mother-in-laws, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles, friends, foes, just time out for EVABODY to stop pretending something did or didn't happen in their past and it's time to move forward into the future!! We've all got to start sometime. What better time is there than this? It's now or never!!
